It thus served as a useful club in the hands of intellectual rebels who sought to break the stranglehold of Aristotelian scholasticism on the universities at this time. Though influenced by the Greek philosophical tradition, the Hermetic tradition is not simply a derivative of Platonic "ideas"; nor should its visionary and experiential focus be lumped into the term "magic" as commonly understood.
