All of his armchair directig is amusing to read if you're into that sort of thing, but for a much more informative, practical, brass-tacks introduction to film-making, I recommend picking up Sidney Lumet's Making Movies instead. On Directing Film is certainly worth reading, directingg only for help in scrutinizing your own work, but it isn't nearly as comprehensive as True and Falsewhich I felt addressed every important element of the fiml process, from rehearsing to auditioning, deconstructed it, and then presented a new and incredibly practical way bg doing it.

David Mamet says a lot of things I disagree with, in fact I think some of them are plain stupid, yet he is so clearly founded in his beliefs about drama, and so well proven in his field, that one can hardly argue with him. The human mind deals with things in a finite manner.

I believe a balance of both is necessary to make a good film. As a person who loves acting but can't tolerate most "actors," Mamet's book was a revelation to me, and helped me to feel okay again about my decision to dodge directkng as a career choice.

On Directing Film

It certainly isn't the way that most filmmakers work - hell, it's confusing to me. An example that occurs immediately to me is Gus Van Sant's Gerrya meandering film with almost no dialogue that simply follows Matt Damon and Casey Affleck around as they get lost in the desert.

The prolific Mamet certainly has the credentials to teach about writing and story construction. But he uses dialogue all the time, and it would have been helpful to hear how he implements his own dialogue in an "uninflected" way.

Though I prefer films that have subtle suggestions to particular emotions, Mamet believes anything more than the subtle directinb of emotion or anything more than portraying personality simply through repetition of simple behaviours is too much and that explicit moments of emotion will just distract the audience.

I know that's vague, but the lack of even theoretical females was so noticeable that I had to check the copyright date.

I'd recommend that anyone interested in directing film read this book, but very very critically!
